Cornell investigating multi-cloud cost management with RightScale

The Cornell University Center for Advanced Computing (CAC) is collaborating with RightScale, recently acquired by Flexera, to understand how to best manage and optimize costs in a multi-cloud world.
CAC added public cloud credits to the Optima platform and is investigating its API, allocation, and accounting capabilities. Credits for the investigation were provided by public cloud providers, including AWS and Google.
"Universities and research facilities are beginning to recognize that cloud management platforms (CMPs) are a useful tool for monitoring and controlling research expenditures, particularly as scientists seek different clouds for different capabilities," said David A. Lifka, vice president for information technologies and CIO at Cornell. "By working with the Optima team, we’re adding to our current CMP experience and gaining knowledge on how to effectively address the unique needs of research computing and education users," he added.
"We’re excited to work with Cornell and to play our part in enabling scientists to focus on their research rather than the complexities of accessing and managing public clouds," said Steve Kochenderfer, manager at Flexera.
Lessons learned from the investigation will be shared with the national cyberinfrastructure community.
CAC is a core Cornell University research facility that conducts cyberinfrastructure research and delivers computing, training, and consulting services to enable scientific discovery and enhance learning. This investigation is part of the NSF-funded Aristotle Cloud Federation project.
Optima is a collaborative cloud cost management and optimization tool that enables organizations to take automated actions to reduce cloud spend. RightScale is headquartered in Santa Barbara, CA, and is a division of Flexera.
