FOR RELEASE: April 24, 2024

Thanks to an ongoing partnership with Amazon Web Services, Cornell University’s Center for Advanced Computing (CAC) is pleased to announce a call for proposals for AWS cloud computing grants. We invite proposals based on a diversity of intellectual approaches and personal backgrounds.

A total of $100,000 in AWS cloud computing credits are available. Awards can range from $5,000 to $25,000 each. They will be awarded in multiple rounds. A grant takes the form of credits for the use of AWS cloud computing resources. Credits will be available for up to 12 months from the award date.

Awardees will also receive up to 8 hours free consulting services from CAC to help them get them started using AWS resources in the Cornell environment, adapting projects to run in the cloud, identifying cost-savings efficiencies, and managing data transfers or archiving.

All Cornell Ithaca and Cornell Tech faculty, staff, and student researchers are invited to apply. The submission deadline is Friday, May 17 at 5:00 p.m. Individuals applying may only be on one proposal.

Proposals should be concise (two-page limit). Clearly specify your research objectives, and outline the need for additional computing resources and how the credits will be used.

Exploratory proposals that would enable the investigator to seek further external sponsored research are particularly encouraged. Each project proposal can request from $5,000 to $25,000 worth of credits. The credits can be used for any eligible AWS service as described in the AWS Promotional Credits Terms. Applicants should review the AWS Promotional Credit Terms, and note that Promotional Credits cannot be applied to Amazon Mechanical Turk, AWS Managed Services, Ineligible AWS Support, AWS Marketplace (including 3rd Party Foundational Models used in Amazon Bedrock), AWS Professional Services, Training, or Amazon Route 53 Domain Registration.

Please include your budget for requested credits with your proposal. Budgets must be estimated using the AWS Pricing Calculator. Below you will find additional resources to help in scoping AWS services that can help accelerate research.

The award decisions will be based on both the scientific merit and suitability for cloud computing. All teams will be expected to submit a brief closeout report at the end of the award duration.

For questions concerning your proposal, please contact CAC director Rich Knepper at rich.knepper@cornell.edu.
