Lifka elected national chair of CASC

ITHACA, N.Y. - David Lifka, director of the Cornell University Center for Advanced Computing (CAC) and director of research computing at Weill Cornell Medical College was elected chair of The Coalition for Academic Scientific Computation (CASC). The announcement was made at SC12, the premier annual international conference on high-performance computing, networking, data and analysis.
Lifka has been vice chair since 2011. Other officers for this year include past chair Amy Apon of the University of Arkansas, vice chair Curt Hillegas of Princeton University, secretary Rajendra Bose of Columbia University, and treasurer Philip Smith of Texas Tech University. Washington liaison for CASC is Sue Fratkin.
CASC has 71 member institutions representing the nation’s most forward thinking universities and computing centers. The organization is dedicated to advocating the use of the most advanced computing technology to accelerate scientific discovery for national competitiveness, global security, and economic success, as well as to develop a diverse and well-prepared 21st century workforce.
Lifka is an industry veteran with more than 20 years of experience in high performance computing management and technology leadership positions at Cornell University and Argonne National Laboratory. His expertise includes sustainable business models for academic research computing facilities, data management and analysis, cloud computing, and parallel job scheduling and resource management systems. Lifka has a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Illinois Institute of Technology, serves on a number of academic and corporate advisory boards, and is the coordinator of architecture and design for the National Science Foundation Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) program. His scheduling technologies have been commercially licensed and he received a ComputerWorld/Smithsonian award for innovations in IT. Lifka also serves as an adjunct associate professor in Computing and Information Science at Cornell.
